In many parts of the world, you'd have to teach people to respect books more. But in Mustang, you have to teach them to respect books less. As in medieval Europe, Tibetan Buddhist monasteries served as repositories for education and culture. Rare, esoteric and printed by hand, books were revered as sacred objects and kept under lock and key. So it was in Mustang for centuries. Now the people must learn that it's okay to pick up a library book, thumb through it, and even take it home on loan. (The monastery above Tsarang, Mustang, Nepal)
